About St. Matthias' Episcopal Church
St. Matthias', named in honor of the first apostle who was selected after the founding of the Christian Church, began in 1896 as a Mission Station of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. In 1910, it became an Organized Mission and in 1915 was given Aided Parish Status. At the Atlanta Diocesan Council of 1975, the congregation was welcomed into full Parish status. The first church building was a wooden structure built in the Carpenter's Gothic style. The building was sold in 1944, and a new church was constructed at the present location at 995 East Tugalo where the first service was held on May 28, 1947. In June 1998, the Church was damaged by fire. While a new sanctuary was underway, the congregation held services in the new parish hall. On February 24, 2001, the new church was dedicated.
The old church has now been restored to a chapel, with a public labryinth. St. Matthias' property also includes a separate Sunday School building, an old home, affectionately known as "the Stone House," which is used as the teenagers space, and another home near the parking lot which serves as the office.
A public Labryinth is now in the space that was the church.
